First Month in Mexico

When we arrived in Mexico in late April, we hit the ground running. Two days after arriving, God led us to our house. The house is only an 8-minute walk to Puebla Bible Seminary, and very close to some other missionary families.

Our second weekend here was our missionary team’s annual retreat, and we spent the weekend at Veracruz. We enjoyed getting to know our teammates some during that time, and we had the opportunity to share our story and how God brought us to Mexico. It was a sweet time of fellowship.

Over the last month we have visited 4 churches in Puebla. We are still looking for the place where God would have us join and minister, and we’re praying for God to direct us in this decision.

Already during our time here, God has begun to provide some friendships for us. We’ve enjoyed getting to know some of the other missionaries here in Puebla, as well as some Mexican believers.

Some other things that have happened:
  • We got a car and license plates and began learning to drive in Mexico
  • We got our Mexican temporary residence visa
  • We got some furniture for our house
  • We met one of our neighbors (husband grew up in US and speaks perfect English!)
  • We traveled with some other missionaries to do a Bible study in San Francisco Huilango (about an hour away)
  • We attended the Seminary graduation ceremony and a graduation party for one of the graduates

Coming Up:

Spanish Tutoring
We are supposed to be meeting with a Spanish tutor this week to begin our Spanish tutoring.

Preparing to teach Greek
Chris has been asked to teach Greek 3 (Exegesis) for the fall semester beginning in August. So this summer will hold a lot of review and preparation time for teaching!

Orientation to Mexico
Part of our first year here in Mexico is dedicated to orientation, that is, learning more about Mexico, its culture, history, and important places and people. As part of that we will be traveling to Mexico City and some other areas in Mexico, and we are planning to try to do some of that this summer.

Opportunities to minister to orphans
One of the biggest burdens on our hearts right now is looking for opportunities to minister in orphan care. Some of you already know, but the family that we were supposed to be working with in the New Beginnings children’s home left the field just a couple weeks before we arrived. So where does that leave us? We’re not exactly sure. It’s very discouraging to be honest. But we know God has a plan. And we still strongly believe that a big part of why God sent us here was to minister to orphans. So we plan to look for other opportunities to minister to orphans as God opens doors. And we will continue to pray that God will let us be a part of starting New Beginnings in His time and His way.

Pray for Us!
Please continue to pray for us as we get adjusted to life in Mexico, as we continue looking for a local church to serve in, and as we look for opportunities to minister to believers and share the gospel with unbelievers. We need God’s help and wisdom. We’re so thankful for the other missionaries here who have helped us so much in our transition here. And we’re very thankful for you, our friends and supporters, who are praying for us and giving generously so we can serve the Lord here. Thank you so much for your part in our ministry!

To Full Support and Beyond

Full Support! We have shared this with some of you in person already, but we wanted to let you all know we have reached our full support! Praise God for his provision! We know that many of you have been praying for us to reach our full support, and God has answered those prayers. What’s Next? Commissioning Services We shared in our last newsletter that we are having commissioning services at our two home churches, Bible Baptist in Traverse City, MI on April 8, and Suber Road Baptist in Greer, SC on April 15. We are excited for these opportunities to celebrate what God has done and His call on our lives. Visas The main hurdle we still need to cross before heading to the field is obtaining our temporary residence visas. We began working through this process over 5 weeks ago, and we have learned that it takes longer than we originally expected. We are waiting on a letter from the seminary in Mexico that we need in order to apply for the visa. Once the letter co...

Collins Family Update: March 2022

Changing Ministry Location Many of you already know that we are planning to move back to the States in the near future. We have shared with many of you the reasons for this change, but if anyone has questions or concerns about this decision, please feel free to reach out to us. We are planning to arrive back in the States in mid-April, and we hope to see many of you then. We are currently pursuing an opportunity to serve in pastoral ministry in the northern Michigan area, and we are waiting for an answer from the church. While we patiently wait for God’s leading in our ministry change, we are continuing to serve in our ministries in Mexico, and we will continue serving via online ministry once we are back in the States. We expect to need missions support at least through the end of May, and perhaps longer depending on how God leads us in the next two months. We will do our best to keep in touch with our supporters as we learn how God is leading our family and ministry. We would ask ...

Goals and Habits for 2021

I've set some pretty big goals for the coming year. With God's help and with some encouragement and accountability I think I can reach these goals and so improve spiritually, physically, relationally, and mentally. Here are the goals organized by categories along with the habits I plan to practice to help me reach the goals. Spiritual Goals Bible Reading Goal : Read/listen through Bible 5 times (ESV, NTV/NBLA, NLT audio 3x) Habits : Follow 5 day/week Bible reading schedule reading each passage in 2 translations; listen to audio 3 days’ worth per day; take 2 days a week to meditate on and apply readings. Prayer Goal : Have a regular personal prayer time (besides “praying without ceasing”) Habits : 10-15 minutes of daily scheduled prayer time (praying through lists and/or Scripture). Memorization Goal : Memorize 1 verse/month in English (ESV), Spanish (NBLA) and original language. Habits : Print and hang verses in the kitchen and review daily in the morning. Mem...
